11. Drawing the Figure Expressively

Graphite on paper…an engaging and yet freeing way to explore line, shape, and contour while drawing the human figure. Class fee also covers the model’s fee.

12. Painting From Life

Explore the rewards and challenges of oil painting from direct observation of life. We will learn the fundamentals of both underpainting and direct oil painting from life using a small still life. Discussion will include application of these principles as they relate to figure, still life, and landscape work. Upon registration you will be provided with a list of recommended materials.

13. Women Artists and You!
Kate Davis-Rosenbaum

Together we will ‘meet’ some amazing women; surveying female visual artists of past, present, near, far, and from all different styles, and life-stories. We will focus on a woman artist who either resembles or intrigues us. Brief lecture-presentations, art-making project(s), and informal discussion will be our format. NO prior art or art history experience is expected or needed. This class is guaranteed to nourish our senses of heritage as women.

15. Rigid Heddle Weaving
Beth Rosdatter
 
The rigid heddle loom is a basic loom that allows you to weave light work, such as placemats, dishtowels, scarves or shawls. We’ll plan our own design, learn how to ‘warp’ the loom, and weave our projects. The skills and techniques you learn using a rigid heddle loom are all transferable to other types of looms. There may be an extra cost of $15 to $25 for your yarn, depending upon your selected project.

18. Collograph Printing

Experiment with texture, shape and color. In this class we will collage, paint, and add materials to build raised surface plates for printmaking.

22. Ink Brush
Li Dongfeng

Many people are amazed by Chinese brush painting. This teacher will make you feel it is not only possible, but fun and exciting. In this entry level class, students will learn brush and ink techniques to explore different subjects. Li will teach the bird and and you will not only learn about painting, but Chinese culture and philosophies as well. There will be a materials fee of approximately $40.

23. Natural History Illustration

Depict nature realistically. Paint with watercolors to create botanical illustrations, iridescent insects and vibrantly colored tropical fish. As time permits, we will incorporate these into larger landscapes with animals and plants in their natural environments. Bring a lunch.

24. Creating Digital Art

An overview of the process of creating art using a computer. Included is an introduction to Adobe Photoshop (retouching, color correction, special effects) and using a graphics tablet with Corel Painter (drawing and painting with a computer). Students will have hands-on experience scanning images, creating an art piece, and printing it.

25. Watercolor
Tricia Spencer

Students will explore and develop their skills for making expressive paintings. Color, texture, graded washes, wet into wet, and expressive brush work will assist you in emphasizing the descriptive elements in your paintings. Composition skills, use of light and the transparent effects of watercolor are essential to understanding how to work with this very sensitive and expressive medium. You will receive a list of the materials you will need to bring to class.

44. Bang! Sound or Noise?

Experience first hand the excitement and wonder of sound. We’ll build our own instruments, create our own music, and get connected through the emotional magic of melody! We’ll learn the math and science connection to music too!

46. Needlepoint Fun
Donna Eads

Needlepoint is fun, social and rewarding. You can decorate for Christmas with beautiful handmade ornaments, make a statement with your own custom designed belt or even stitch a rug. We will learn the basic stitch and a few decorative stitches. Have fun, relax, and socialize over a wonderfully satisfying craft.

48. Exploring and Creating Abstractions

Get ready to explore the endless possibilities of abstract art through two approaches. Using design, color, shape, and form we will create our own non-representational work of art. And, on the more representational side of abstract, we’ll choose something from everyday life and distort it using collage, paint, and layering of other materials.

53. Dry Painting

Chalk and oil pastels are excellent media for fast, realistic drawings, for effects usually achieved with paints. Various subjects will be demonstrated and rendered, from figures and landscapes to sci-fi themes.

54. Decorate an Herbal Christmas Tree
Melinda Boyer

Learn about holiday herbs while decorating a 9 to 12” faux tree with green moss, herbs such as lavender and rosemary, and preserved flowers like baby roses. Then add your own creative touches by making Fimo (color polymer clay that’s baked) ornaments of your designs. These make lovely tabletop trees to impress your friends and family.

64. Introductory Drawing and Design Fundamentals

65. Drawing With Color Pencils

The smooth velvety texture of color pencils can add depth and brilliant pigment to your composition. If you haven’t used color pencils since childhood, a lot has changed; they’re richer, easier to blend and shade, and to lay down smooth colors. We will also experiment with watercolor pencil.

67. Scandinavian Holiday Crafts

Enjoy a family holiday bonding experience and a little “simple living”. Put your hands to work creating decorations and gifts using Northern European traditional techniques including how to craft unique Scandinavian holiday ornaments using straw, paper and foil. Simple family fun!

69. Bringing Still-Life to LIFE

Through thinking ‘outside the box’, create your own still-life set-up using a variety of materials. Then, bring in several small items from home that are important to you and include those in your still-life painting. We will use charcoal, pencil, and acrylics in our work.

78. Herbal Crafts and Aromatherapy  
Melinda Boyer

Create aromatic gifts and decorations with herbs and essential oils. Students will explore the world of herbs and create a 14” wreath of native grasses and herbs, embellished with dried flowers, seedpods and mosses. Students will also work with eight essential oils to blend aromatic gifts including a custom bath salt, a holiday room spray and a soothing body cream. Enjoy the fragrant powers of herbs and flowers.
