Join architect Ross Primmer of DeLeon & Primmer Architecture Workshop (the architects designing the LASC’s new renovation and expansion) as he discusses the design studio’s focus on cultural and civic environments and drawing inspiration from local traditions of craft. DeLeon & Primmer’s work with nonprofit organizations and grass-roots community efforts has shaped a practice grounded in consensus building and exploring architectural possibilities that enrich and nurture communities. The firm is currently working with Lexington’s Living Arts and Science Center and the Filson Historical Society in Louisville.

Proceeds from this workshop will be contributed to the Living Arts & Science Center’s Imagine This Capital Campaign.

Also during the Craft Market the Living Arts & Science Center will present the two hands-on activities listed below, as well as Evolving Traditions, a “touchable” display. Evolving Traditions teaches children and adults about the changing traditions of Kentucky craft artists through hands-on material, photographs of the work of Kentucky artists and samples of their works-in-progress.

Bookmark Weaving
Saturday, March 3, 11 AM – 5 PM
Raw wool will be available to card, spin and weave. Design and weave your own bookmarks to take home.

Shibori Dyeing Techniques
Sunday, March 4, 12 PM – 4 PM
Shibori is a Japanese term for ancient methods of dyeing fabric by binding, stitching, twisting and compressing. Use rubber bands, pebbles and different binding methods to create unique designs. Living Arts & Science Center instructors will help you dye your own Shibori scarf or handkerchief, which you can take home.

Discovery Night: Glow in the Dark Chemistry!

Thursday, March 1st, 6-8pm

Explore hands-on chemistry during this evening of light and color chemical discoveries! University of Kentucky chemistry professor, Anne Frances Miller, will teach and demonstrate the chemical and physical processes by which energy can be converted from light to chemical, or the reverse (think fireflies) in two presentations at 6:00 and 7:00! We will also learn how pigments and dyes produce color! Bring a plain T-shirt and your imagination, for an enlightening evening of illuminating demonstrations. We’ll supply the paints for you to create a colorful glow-in-the-dark work of wearable art!

Delve into the wonderful world of innovative fiber art during this evening of exploration with internationally recognized artist and educator, Arturo Sandoval! A Professor of Art at the University of Kentucky, Sandoval uses unique materials primarily designed as tapes or films for the packaging and automobile industry. He creatively incorporates these materials into woven, interlaced webs of visual beauty! Embark on a visual journey with the artist as he talks about and shows his art pieces and processes. Also, during Discovery Night, create a piece of your own fiber art to take home!

Create your own beaded fabric bracelet using an ancient off-loom weaving technique called peyote stitch. Using tiny glass beads, woven with a needle and thread, you will make a stunning, flexible, fabric bracelet. In addition to learning the flat peyote stitch, you will learn basics of design, needle threading, knotting and adding new thread, and proper finishing for your clasp or closure. For beginning beaders or those who want to brush up on their skills. Bring your own size 8 seed beads or use ours! We also recommend bringing reading glasses or magnification and a small craft lamp.

As the nights grow longer and cooler, come to the LASC for a cozy evening of storytelling. Members of the Lexington Spellbinders group will enchant us with fun and fanciful African stories. Accompanied by drums, these seasoned storytellers will inspire your family to establish time for sharing your own tales.

Join our teachers to create a puppet to take home and help you narrate your own family history or a wild tale of your own imagination!
