Discovery Nights
Join
us here at the Living Arts & Science Center to
experience art and science.
On the first Thursday of
every month we invite a local artist or scientist to
come
and show us a little of what they do.
April
3rd, 6-8pm
The Art of
Expression!
Artists make art for a variety of
reasons. Some make art for self-reflection, others tell a story, or hope to
promote social change through their work. Many women artists have created art
to address social issues or concerns. Our guest artist, Ilona Szekely Tackett,
is working with the Kentucky Foundation for Women on issues of art and feminist
social change. Join her to learn about these issues and artists and to create
your own art based on things that are important in your life.
Want to learn more?
If you are 12 yrs. or older,
join Ilona for a class that will meet on Saturdays, April 12, 19, and 26,
from 10 am – 12 noon to create art works that inspire change in others.

May 1st, 6-8 pm
Live Reptile Night!
Explore the
amazing world of intricate scales and cold blood at our Live Reptile Discovery
Night! Reptiles have been around for 300 million years. Today there are over
6,500 species of reptiles still thriving. House of Reptiles from Louisville, KY
will be bringing several LIVE reptiles such as a 60 lb. African Spur Thigh
Tortoise, a 2 foot alligator, snakes, lizards, and more! Don’t miss your chance
to touch a live alligator and learn about the importance of reptile habitat,
climate needs, and their unending dependence on the Sun.

June 5th, 6-8pm
Prehistoric Eggs, Skulls, & Skeletons!
Fossils provide us with a wonderful record of prehistoric life. A fossil
normally preserves only part of the once-living organism, such as the
bones and teeth of
vertebrates,
or the exoskeletons
of invertebrates.
Get a glimpse of some of these rare finds during our June Discovery Night with
special guest collector, Jack Hankla, of Danville, KY. Unravel the mystery of
the past as we explore items such as real dinosaur eggs, teeth, & skeletons as
well as wooly rhinoceros skulls, narwhal tusks, insects preserved in amber, fish
& lizard fossils, meteorites, and more!
Happy July
4th!
There will be no Discovery Night in July due to the holiday weekend.

August 7th, 6-8pm
The Art & Science of Batik!
Batik is an ancient process of dyeing fabric by using a resist technique;
covering areas of cloth with a dye-resistant substance, such as wax, to prevent
them absorbing colors. Batik is commonly found in many parts of the world, and
is especially well known for the very detailed and beautiful cloth and wall
hangings produced in Indonesia and West Africa. The process has many steps,
which involve applying multiple layers of wax and dye to create an incredibly
colorful and dynamic design. Our guest Batik artist, Gail Cohen of Lexington
KY, will be exhibiting her incredible Batiks and answering questions you may
have about this amazing process! “Dying” to create a Batik of your very own?
Guest fiber artist, Mary Nehring, will demonstrate the process of creating a
Batik; then you will have the opportunity to create your very own Batik to take
home!

Current Science Exhibit:
Catching the
Wind: Flight and Imagination
|
Explore the
artistic and scientific worlds of flight,
aerodynamics, and energy in this unique exhibit featuring a variety of hands-on
activities for all ages.
Students will be guided through various stations to: * “Catch the wind” and
experiment with flying the LASC indoor model airplane and discover the
principles which keep planes aloft. * Solve the mystery of animal flight by
observing our live birds and bees, then dig up the past to uncover ancient
fossils of animals that once ruled the skies. * Look into the past to see how
flight design has evolved from Leonardo da Vinci to the present; then create
your own design to test in the LASC wind tunnel. * Catch the wind at the
sailboat station while learning about wind speed, direction, and position. * Use
a wind turbine to harness the wind and create a natural form of energy/power. *
And much more!! |
