About Us

Welcome to
The Living Arts and Science Center

A place where creativity has continued to grow since 1968.

The Living Arts & Science Center  (LASC) was created as a not-for-profit organization in 1968 to “provide creative and unique opportunities for exploration and education in the arts and sciences.”  In these 42 years, the LASC has not only moved with the times but has become a trusted creative resource and a stimulating force that makes Central Kentucky a better place.

Each year, the LASC presents an extensive and diverse array of programming including:

  Over 400 classes and workshops for children 18-months old to adults;

Seven to nine art exhibits of original work by local and regional artists;

   Hands-on Discovery exhibits exploring relationships between art and science;

Performances and workshops with local and regional musicians,  storytellers and puppet companies;

Free community arts programs provided to numerous social service agencies and neighborhood and community centers;

Field Trip programs focusing on Kentucky’s core content in the arts and sciences;

Discovery Night programs featuring guest artists and scientists sharing their work and collections; and

Free arts activities at community events such as Arbor Day at the Arboretum, MayFest, the High Hope Steeplechase, the Latino Festival, the Lexington Christmas Chorus, the Roots and Heritage Festival, and at our own Family Fun Day at the LASC.

 The Living Arts & Science Center is located just 3 ½ blocks from Main Street in the Kinkead House, a beautiful 1847 home listed on the National Register for Historic Places.   We enjoy 1 ½ lively acres in our urban setting that includes a waterfall and stream system with native Kentucky plantings, a butterfly garden and children’s garden, an outdoor classroom and several works of public art created by local artists and community members.

Ample off-street parking is located directly in front of our building.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Application

Summer Teachers in Training   High school and college students 16 or older who plan on being teachers in the future can receive valuable learning experiences working with our teachers, classes, and students. If you can commit to a full week this summer, please apply.

Kids in the Hall  (Ages 12 - 15) These volunteer positions are for energetic smiling, dependable kids. You will be helping with hall monitoring, answering the phone, toting things up and down the stairs, supervising the science room during dismissal time, and and working with teachers, staff, and students.

All Purpose Volunteers, Helpers, and Ambassadors    If you have energy and time to share, we can find something for you to do here at LASC! Every day is a unique experience. There are also many opportunities to go with us out into the community where we provide art experiences and promote LASC's programs and classes.

To volunteer, please call LASC at 252-5222 and ask to speak with Heather. An application and parental permission may be required.

How about it? Won't you join us?
We need you.

The Living Arts & Science Center’s programs are made possible through the generous support of LexArts.  The annual Campaign for the Arts has raised millions of dollars in support of the visual, literary and performing arts in Lexington.  Through the success of the Campaign, LexArts supports the Living Arts & Science Center with an allocation of $101,250 for general operating support.  We thank the many individuals whose passion for the arts compelled them to give generously of their time and money.  Together these donations helped LexArts raise more than $1 million for the arts community.

Special thanks to the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government and the Kentucky Arts Council for their continued partnership in ensuring a flourishing future for the arts in Lexington and central Kentucky.

The Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, supports the Living Arts & Science Center with state tax dollars and federal funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.
