Discovery Field Trips

To schedule a field trip program or group tour, contact Katherine Bullock, Educational Outreach Coordinator at 859-252-5222 or KBullock@LASCLEX.org.

There is great beauty, discovery and invention in art and science. The Living Arts and Science Center’s exhibits awaken children’s imaginations and curiosity, and provide exciting opportunities for hands-on exploration and experimentation.

Each year The LASC presents a major, participatory, Discovery exhibit for the school year and a playful hands-on exhibit during the summer.   The Discovery exhibits connect KERA core concepts with hands-on learning and are visited by thousands of Kentucky school children each year through fieldtrip programs.  Additionally, the Living Arts & Science Center’s StarLab Planetarium is available for field trips at the LASC or for in-school programs.

The Architecture of Life

Explore life in a new way -- by looking beneath the surface in our new hands-on Discovery Exhibit, The Architecture of Life! Students will have the opportunity to investigate natural and created structures as they:

• Find out what bones, skeletons, buildings and bridges have in common by looking at the structure and function of animals, plants, and man-made structures!

• Explore adaptations of vertebrates and invertebrates by comparing an array of amazing skeletons such as mammals (including humans), birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians and by climbing inside an exoskeleton costume to see how it feels to wear your bones on the outside!

• From spider webs to skyscrapers, and bee hives to bridges compare animal made habitats with those of humans while investigating building designs that are based on nature!

• Use your own energy to make the life size LASC skeleton move while learning about skeletal and joint structure and function, open a larger than life model bone to catch a glimpse of what bones are made of, or climb on an enormous vertebrae to learn fun facts about the importance of the spine!

• Dream up an architectural design all your own with interactive design software as well as traditional architectural design tools and methods while learning about the elements of art and principles of design.

• Learn about the insides of plants and our LIVE animals as we study their structures and how they fit into the food chain and larger ecosystem patterns!

• Dig into the Earth as you search for fossilized bones in our archaeological dig site and learn about Earth materials used in constructing buildings!

• Uncover the past as you try forensic sculpture for a day - explore the human facial bones and muscles!

• Become an engineer for a day while learning the physical science of arches and bridges in our hands-on building site, and much more!

Field Trip Details:

A field Trip to The Living Arts & Science Center lasts approximately 90 minutes.  We can handle up to 75 students at a time with the group being divided among the programs and then rotating the groups.

A Double Field Trip lasts 90 minutes and includes two 45 minute components: Component 1 and Component 2.  Cost is $2.50 per person (Teachers are free).

A Triple Field Trip includes  Component 1, Component 2, and Component 3, the StarLab Planetarium, where students can learn about daily and seasonal changes in the sky, constellations, planets, phases of the moon & more! Cost is $3.50 per person payable to The Living Arts and Science Center. (Teachers are free).

There is a minimum charge of $36 (double) or $50 (triple) for groups of less than 12 students.  For groups of between 12 and 20 students, the cost is $3.50 per student (double) or $4.50 per student (triple).

Component 2: The Explorer's Classroom

What do bones, skeletons, buildings and bridges have in common? They all provide structure and architecture for life! Grab a bone out of the mystery box and see if you can identify its owner and purpose, dissect an owl pellet to find out how bones can teach us about the food chain, create a bone / bridge strength tester as we experiment with the physics of weight and pressure, and much more!

Component 3: The STARLAB Planetarium
(Inside StarLab's 16 by 11 foot dome, a projector displays the night sky as it looks from anywhere on the Earth and any time of the night or year.)

Observe the beauty and science of the night sky in our inflatable planetarium. Design your own STARLAB show to best fit your needs. Choose from a variety of dynamic show topics such as
**Shapes, constellations, and monthly changes in the sky
**
Phases of the moon
**Star color
**Planets
**Greek / African / or North American mythology
**Chinese seasons and legends
**Ancient Egyptian culture and legends
**Earth and lunar cycles
**Using a star map at home

StarLab Outreach  Let us bring StarLab to you!!!!
Not only does it save you money and time, but it also makes the StarLab available to your whole school in one day!  All you need is an indoor area at least 21 x 21 x 11 feet. A cafeteria, gym, stage, or library could be used. We will provide an instructor and all other necessary materials.  Call for rates for StarLab outreach programs.
