Discovery Field Trip          Art Field Trip          StarLab Planetarium and Outreach

Discovery Field Trips

There is great beauty, discovery and invention in art and science. The Living Arts and Science Center’s exhibits awaken children’s imaginations and curiosity, and provide exciting opportunities for hands-on exploration and experimentation.

Each year The LASC presents a major, participatory, Discovery exhibit for the school year and a playful hands-on exhibit during the summer.   The Discovery exhibits connect KERA core concepts with hands-on learning and are visited by thousands of Kentucky school children each year through fieldtrip programs.  Additionally, the Living Arts & Science Center’s StarLab Planetarium is available for field trips at the LASC or for in-school programs.

New Discovery exhibit for the 2007-2008 School Year!

Catching the Wind:  Flight and Imagination

Children and adults will enjoy this exciting exploration of the art, science and history
of airplane and animal flight, aerodynamics, and energy.

Field Trip Details:

A field Trip to The Living Arts & Science Center lasts approximately 90 minutes.  We can handle up to 75 students at a time with the group being divided among the programs and then rotating the groups.

A Double Field Trip lasts 90 minutes and includes two 45 minute components: Component 1 and Component 2.  Cost is $2.50 per student (Teachers are free).

There is a minimum charge of $36 (double) or $50 (triple) for groups of less than 12 students.  For groups of between 12 and 20 students, the cost is $3.50 per student (double) or $4.50 per student (triple).

Component 1: The Discovery Exhibit  (Suitable for all grades)

Catching the Wind: Flight & Imagination
Explore the artistic and scientific worlds of flight, aerodynamics, and energy in this unique exhibit featuring a variety of hands-on activities for all ages.
Students will be guided through various stations to: * “Catch the wind” and experiment with flying the LASC indoor model airplane and discover the principles which keep planes aloft. * Solve the mystery of animal flight by observing our live birds and bees, then dig up the past to uncover ancient fossils of animals that once ruled the skies. * Look into the past to see how flight design has evolved from Leonardo da Vinci to the present; then create your own design to test in the LASC wind tunnel. * Catch the wind at the sailboat station while learning about wind speed, direction, and position. * Use a wind turbine to harness the wind and create a natural form of energy/power. * And much more!!

KERA Core Concepts covered:
Motion & Forces / Physical Science - SC-1.2.1 and 1.2.2 and 1.2.3
Objects in the Sky – SC-2.2.2 (STARLAB)
Changes in the Earth and Sky – SC-2.2.3 (STARLAB)
The Earth & the Universe / Earth & Space - SC-2.3.2 and 2.3.3

Component 2: The Explorer's Classroom

Explore the world of wind, wings, and weather in this interactive program. Learn about wind energy and the Sun’s role in all forms of energy (food chain, solar energy, basic needs of organisms). Find out how birds are affected by the wind and how they must adapt to different conditions. Test the weather and measure the wind with your friends as we create wind socks and anomometers.

Component 3: The STARLAB Planetarium
(Inside StarLab's 16 by 11 foot dome, a projector displays the night sky as it looks from anywhere on the Earth and any time of the night or year.)

Observe the beauty and science of the night sky in our inflatable planetarium. Design your own STARLAB show to best fit your needs. Choose from a variety of dynamic show topics such as
**Shapes, constellations, and monthly changes in the sky
**
Phases of the moon
**Star color
**Planets
**Greek / African / or North American mythology
**Chinese seasons and legends
**Ancient Egyptian culture and legends
**Earth and lunar cycles
**Using a star map at home

StarLab Outreach  Let us bring StarLab to you!!!!
Not only does it save you money and time, but it also makes the StarLab available to your whole school in one day!  All you need is an indoor area at least 21 x 21 x 11 feet. A cafeteria, gym, stage, or library could be used. We will provide an instructor and all other necessary materials.  Call for rates for StarLab outreach programs.
