CKCPJ’s 20 Days for Peace and Justice

ongratulations to The Central Kentucky Council for Peace and Justice on their 25th year anniversary. In recognition of the important work that the CKCPJ does, the Living Arts and Science Center is joining with them for their 20 Days for Peace and Justice Celebration taking place throughout Lexington, October 4-24. Take a look at the LASC’s classes designated with a CKCPJ at the end of the description. These classes focus on art and the many human and environmental issues for which artists and their works speak so powerfully. 4. Art As Instrument for Change

We’ll make larger than lifesize silhouette portraits of our selves—a common craft of the 1920’s. Once we’ve mastered this craft, we will take a look at today’s society and discuss ways to use art to educate, inform, and to discuss a point of view. We’ll then plan and stage our own art-based event, using giant silhouette puppets to get our point across!

7. Eco Art 101

Eco and Earth Art was first recognized in the 1970’s and it reminds people to care for our natural environment. We’ll look at examples of earth art and design an eco-art project to build on the LASC grounds. So, what will we build? It could be a spiral earth mound, a rock sculpture, or people woven from tall grass. Dress to get dirty and plan on working outside!

The Silver Process: From Blank Film to Finished Print

Discover the world through the eye of a machine: a 35 mm camera! You will learn to shoot a meaningful  photograph, process your own film, and print from negatives. 13. Beginning Rigid Heddle Weaving

We will learn how to plan our own individual design, how to ‘warp’ the loom, and weave our projects. The rigid heddle loom is a basic loom that will allow you to weave light work, such as placemats, dishtowels, scarves, shawls or fabric for clothing. The skills and techniques you learn using a rigid heddle loom are all transferable to other types of looms. Depending on your project choice there may be an extra cost of $15 to $25 for your yarn.

67. Essential Oils for the Holidays

In the first week you will learn how to unlock the power of essential oils and put them to work for you. We’ll discuss the history of essential oils and aromatherapy, then we’ll delve into the properties and uses of 10 basic essential oils. The second week will present tips on blending and creating bath salts and bath oils. Everyone will put together their own bath salt, massage oil and a perfume blend. This class will meet in the Gallery in Bronte Bistro at Joseph-Beth Booksellers.
